In August 2013, I set up Geoger Ltd. as a fully fledged company. I had a rough plan about what I was going to do, how I was going to do it, and I had a single contract for a couple of days work lined up and ready. I’d been in the commercial world since 2004, I knew how things operated. This was going to be a doddle, right?

Since 2013, I have had the best times of my career and I hope that these will carry on into the future. At the same time, starting and running a micro-business has been the most challenging, frustrating and frightening thing that I’ve done. One of the most sensible things I did right at the start was find a business mentor.

Oxfordshire Business Enterprises has helped Geoger be a success, through providing me with access to a brilliant business mentor. Initially we met on a monthly basis, and discussed topics around sales, network growth and client retention. In later months, our meetings were less frequent and discussions tended to be checks that the business was going well and that I was able to look into the future with more certainty and predict workloads, or upcoming issues. Without a doubt though, the most useful outcome of the entire process was for my mentor to help grow my self-confidence and self-belief in what I was (am!) trying to do. I now better understand the type of personality I have, and how I respond to certain (business) situations. By knowing this, I am able to put in place plans to deal with most of the business circumstances that I find myself, and Geoger, dealing with.

If you are thinking of setting up your own business, or even looking to expand the business you are currently in, then I heartily recommend that you try to find a business mentor.

And if my mentor’s reading this, thank you again.
